Twilight at Muusa's Hut

The Sarestoniemi StudioMuusa's Hut

After three holidays in Levi, Finland I finally saw the first truly snowy day. The flakes were large and heavy.  It made for a delightful afternoon snowmobile safari.

Circling behind Katkä and Pyhä fells, the wilderness revealed breathtaking scenes. The soft powder of the newly fallen snow made for a buttery smooth ride.

While I had hoped for a sunny day, the snow gave the journey a unique charm. The fun of driving the snowmobile was secondary to the solitude of the Lappish forests.

On the back side of Pyhä we left the main trail to go up to Muusa's hut. The remote log cabin sits on the site of an old reindeer roundup enclosure overlooking the vast flat bottom lands of the Levijoki.  Levitunturi, Katkatunturi and the foothills of Aakenustunturi frame the horizon.

Unreachable except by sled or ski, it was a glimpse back in time - time before tourists, roads or electricity.
