The Reindeer Farm

The Raekallio Gallery in Pöntsö

At Levin Lapinkyla reindeer farm

Reindeer and Lapland are almost synonymous.  There are more reindeer than people in Finnish province of Lapland.

Reindeer farms open to the public offer tourists the opportunity to see traditional Lappish culture and usually the opportunity for a reindeer sleigh ride ranging from a few hundred meters to several kilometers.

Log buildings covered with snow, hand-hewed fences, smoking sauna and reindeer wondering freely around creates a bucolic scene worthy of a Grandma Moses painting.

Levin Lapinkylä is a traditional farm along the Ounasjoki (Ounas River) near Levi.  The farm has been in the same family for five generations and only recently opened for tourists.

Several of the log buildings date back at least 150 years.  Even the more modern ones are in the traditional Lappish style.
