Scenes of Kittilä
Approaching Kittila from the air Sometime between 10:30 and 12:00 on January 29, 2002, I first crossed the Arctic Circle. No celebration. No popping of champagne. Not even an announcement from the cockpit. I journeyed into the magnificent world of Finnish Lapland without fanfare. Looking down upon the forests transected by rivers and dotted with frozen lakes, the only hint I was going north was the gradual whitening of the trees. As we approached the Kittila airport I could see the fells on the horizon. I was in the Arctic! During my visits to the area, I have explored more than 400 km by snowmobile, 11 km by reindeer sled, 10 km by dog sled and numerous more by car and snowshoe in the west central part of Kittila. Photos and musings about those places away from Levi center are in this section. Note: Kittila? Levi? Sirkka? Where and what are these places? Kittila is a municipality (county) in Finnish Lapland. Sirkka is a village in Kittila. Levi is a winter sports center around Levi fell in the village of Sirkka. |
